Hey guys, Alicia here, and I’m excited to be giving you this overview of Greengeeks review… Greengeeks is one of the leading web hosting platforms that pride themself on being friendly to the environment while giving you, their customers the best services available.
For those who know me you know, I’m no tech geek or computer guru, nor that I’m going to claim to be one… so to me trying to tell all about SSD drives and mySQL, nor try to tell you that you need to have HTTP/2 & PHP 7 latest version and all that other stuff.
Quite frankly, really unless you are a computer tech or really into that stuff, who cares and is it really relevant for what we do?
All we need to know as webmasters and online business owners is:
- How much does it cost
- How fast it is
- Does it have good support
- And are they safe and secure
So in this Greengeeks review, we’ll take a look at the pros and cons, uptime guarantee, customer support, speed as well as pricing, and see how this shared hosting stacks up against my top choice in website hosting.
Before we dive too far into this web hosting review, I want to add that my #1 web host by choice for all my main website hosting is WPX Hosting.

Greengeeks Review Introduction
Greengeeks web hosting first started out in 2008 and have their office located in California.
So at the time of writing, they have been bringing you clean, green environmentally friendly wind energy web hosting for over 12 years now and they are not going anywhere in a short time.
With over 40,000 customers and growing, Greengeeks hosting company has more than half a million web sites hosted on their VPS and shared hosting plans.
Co-founder Tray Gardner has been in the industry since 1999 and knows what’s what and what webmasters are looking for and require in a platform.
Before starting Greengeeks, Tray has been involved with many other well-known web hosting companies, including iPage, iPowerweb, Dot5Hosting and a few others.
Greengeeks Shared Hosting Plans and Pricing
Greengeeks have on offer several WordPress web hosting solutions:
- VPS Hosting all at an affordable price.
The companies most praised features is that it’s the world leader of being the industry’s leading eco-friendly web hosting provider putting back 3 times the power you consume into the grid making them more environmentally friendly than any other web hosting company at the time of writing.
There basic shared hosting plan was once called Greengeeks Ecosite starter now simply called Greengeeks Lite starts at just $2.95 a month, Pro plan starts at $5.95 per month and their Premium starts at $11.95 per month.
With every new plan you can take them up on the free domain offer, but I don’t really recommend doing that.
The reasoning is if you’re not completely happy and you decided to cancel within the money-back guarantee period, you will still have to pay for the domain. Making it not a free domain at all. It’s not just Green geeks that do this, most hosting company do.
We use and recommend Namecheap for domain registration and they also have free Whois and make it private if you want to have that information set as.
To get the prices mentioned above you have to lock in for their longest contract which is for 36 months and the price does go a ton.
If you only select either of the other two options of 12 or 24-month contracts the prices are slightly higher. Bear in mind that after the 30-day money-back guarantee has run its course and you’re not happy, you won’t get any back regardless of the period of the plan.
Like most web hosting companies, Greengeeks is no different with their hosting plan set-up. They use the tried and tested manipulation of offering you a cheap intro rate then after the term has past and it’s time for renewal, you will be paying full retail prices.
That takes the Lite plan when renewal time from $2.95/month to $9.95 a month for one website
So if the funds do allow, try and sign up for the longest term which is 36-months.
All the plans come with the following Essential features:
Greengeeks Lite Plan
Greengeeks lite plan is their starter plan and is the cheapest at a starting price of just $2.95 per month then jumps up to $9.95 a month. With it you get:
I recommend you purchase your domain from say renowned registry like Namecheap. It’s a bad idea to have your domain registered under your hosting provider.
- If in the 30 day period you decide that Greengeeks web host isn’t the right host for you and cancel within the period time, you will be paying for your domain name registration. Greengeeks will charge you $24 bucks
- You will more than likely have more than one domain name so keep them all together in the one place
- More than likely you’ll be paying more over the standard pricing. Check out Namecheap here and compare it before you sign up. You don’t have to purchase the domain from Greengeeks.
Greengeeks Pro Plan
Greengeeks Pro plan comes with the same features as the Lite plan with the main differences is pricing.
The Pro plan starts at $5.95 per month then bounces to $14.95 a month once the honeymoon period is over and you are hitting full retail price.
You still get the options of signing up for 12, 24 or 36-months and the main differences between this plan and the lite plan is:
- You get unlimited domains that you can host with them
- You are allocated with 2x better performance over the Lite plan
Greengeeks Premium Plan
Greengeeks Premium plan starts at $11.95 per month and then jumps up to $24.95 a month once the original plan has run its time and renewal is up.
You get all the same Essential features as with the other plans above, but you get 4x performance over the Lite plan and 2x over the performance of the Pro plan.
You also get an upgrade premium wildcard SSL and a free dedicated IP address.
That rounds up Greengeeks shared hosting plans with an overview of what is detailed with each plan.
Greengeeks VPS Review
Greengeeks also offer Managed VPS hosting for those who are looking for more flexibility, control, security and, performance over their shared hosting.
Starting at $39.95 a month for their 2GB plan and heading north from there with the 4GB at $59.95 and the 8GB priced at $109.95 per month. You only have the option with VPS hosting as a month per month plan.
You also get free SSL certificates, free web transfer if you are moving from another platform. This will save you a few bucks and a ton of headaches when doing any site migration.
Greengeeks guarantee that they will give you a 99.9% uptime which matches the industry-standard uptime, but most accounts are reporting and getting higher above the uptime they offer of 99.9%
Higher the number to 100 is better as the lower the score is, allows more time for your website to be offline. Many offer a 99.98 and even 99.99% guarantee and for most website owners that little difference won’t be that noticeable.
You’re never going to get a host to give you 100% as there will always be downtimes for a server upgrade and maintenance.
If you need any kind of support Greengeeks are available around the clock 24-7. They have 3 means of contact and they are:
- Email ticket
- Phone support
- Live chat
Not to mention they do have a wealth of knowledge base how-tos and tutorials in their help section part of the site.
The response is nice and quick but they do have their problems when it comes to really give the customer real support.
There are a lot of disgruntled reviews regarding this matter and it does appear that of recent there has been a huge improvement, which by the sounds needed it and you can see the shift on Trustpilot reviews and what other customers are saying.
Greengeeks is jammed packed with security features and will automatically protect your website. The company offers nightly backups, free SSL certificates, realtime security scanning, as well as enhanced spam protection.
They also include hosting account isolation so pretty much what that means is it has it’s own secured virtual file system (Secure vFS). So none of the other hosting customers have any impact on your site.
Greengeeks web hosting offers you a 30-day-money back guarantee. There is nothing flash about it, just the industry-standard guarantee.
Try them out for 30-days and if your 100% completely happy in any way… just contact the support crew and you’ll get your money back.
Like I said above, if you purchase your domain name through them and want to cancel your account within the 30 days, you will get slugged the domain registration fee, so bear that in mind. That is why we recommend using companies like Namecheap for domain registration.
Greengeeks webmail allows you to have unlimited email accounts for your domain. So you can have a professional-looking business email account. So you can have, yourname@yourwebsite. com. So like my site here I have Alicia@mtwda.com, or you can have support@yourdomain.
Makes it look more professional than say firstname.lastname@example.org. You see what I mean, plus if you are going to do email marketing which by the way I recommend Getresponse. They have one of the highest inbox delivery rates on the market.
Most email responders now require personalized email and not just Gmail or Hotmail accounts.
Greengeeks Reseller Hosting
Greengeeks reseller hosting is one way to start your very own business selling web hosting. You can also include it as another way to optimize your website depend on what services you offer or your site is about.
Starting at $19.95 per month for a 10 cPanel account and tops at 50 cPanel accounts at $59.95 per month. You can purchase the plans in:
- 3 months
Same as all other plans, once its renewal time the costs jump up. If you want a longer period than the 12 months on offer, you might be able to reach out to their accounts department for more deals.
